December 2011 - Buckle Up and Live! - DONE

How profound these words, BUCKLE UP AND LIVE as we drove out of the DMV on Davis' 16th birthday after obtaining his long awaited drivers license.

Fasten your safety belts, clench your buttocks!

It's going be a bumpy ride!

- Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004)

Many emotions filled my heart as the week of this birthday approached.  Turning 16 is a huge right of passage and life changing age.  The weeks surrounding this day were filled with "normal" anticipation and preparation for a birthday, however, deep down(and often right at the surface), this marked a milestone for me.  The days proceeding Davis' birthday were filled with a horrible chest cold, a trip to PCMC, and labs.  Despite being sick for a few weeks, and after humble prayers,  some of Davis' labs were stronger than ever.  A positive sign that his body is doing what it needs to in order to continue this recovery phase of life.
After such an experience of bad news after bad news, I almost have to retrain myself to accept the good news. Believe in it.  I inwardly have held by breath with each lab drawn over the year and continue to.........  This moment in time for me was one of the events of life that I questioned would ever take place for this boy.  Although sustained in the middle of a crisis, the constant threat on his life did cause me to occasionally question the what ifs!  I did not allow myself to visit that dark place but a few brief moments.  In early December as I thought of this birthday, I was overcome with one such instance.  I remember sitting in the waiting room for the fifth time in seven days, pure exhaustion had set in and I allowed the questions; what if he doesn't see again, what if he doesn't get to drive or go on his first date or to his first dance...then the realization, that he may not, and also the realization that I could not do anything about it, but be there, hold tight and have hope in that moment.
I am grateful that I had strength, support and the faith of this boy to remind me of the calm that can be felt if we just hope and breathe.

This month as we celebrate amazing labs, driving( which I have to say, he is a great driver), going to his first dance and being sixteen, I am constantly in awe at the wonder and miracles of life.

To my wonderful boy, I say thank you for being so believing and strong.  You have worked so hard for your physical strength, and I am proud of your ability to maintain, grow and share your spiritual strength.  I am so grateful for each and every day that I am your mother.  You are a light in my world.   I maintain the thought that describes you best;  "Nothing is so strong as gentleness and nothing is so gentle as real strength."  You are my hero and I love you.

One who gains strength by overcoming obstacles
possesses the only strength
which can overcome adversity.

HAPPY DECEMBER! Love, Murphy

HAPPY DECEMBER!
Ah, this is the life! Our Christmas Elf, Murphy, showed up right on time on December 13th, for the 12 days before Christmas.  He magically found some mini marshmallows in our kitchen and just couldn't resist taking a marshmallow bubble bath before starting the holiday season.  Emily, being the first to find Murphy, was absolutely smitten with him and the Christmas spirit.  The joy that the belief and excitement of a little one brings is contagious and each day as she plays hot and cold with everyone to find Murphy, we all believe even stronger in the magic of Christmas.
Can I tell you what I really want?

After hiking around the mountain at Grandma's and Papa's pines, we finally all agreed on our tree to cut down.  When Courtney found out that it was the same price for any height after 6 ft, she quickly convinced everyone to max-out the footage and we ended up with a 19 foot 6 inch tree.  We were quite the sight, slowly, driving home as the tree exceeded the 12 foot trailer that we were pulling!

Ben was thrilled to discover that someone had left the top of a tree, just for him to find and decorate and put in his room.  It was like winning the lottery when the tree guy told him he could just have it...for free!

How many engineering minds will it take to get the tree in the house and set nicely in it's Christmas home in the stairwell that extends from the basement to the main floor?(without messing up my newly painted stairwell walls)

Maneuver #1 get it through the door!

maneuver #2 four-point turn in family room to get it over the banister.

#3 angle to far corner
#4, #5 and #6 stand it up, walk it down, lift it back and angel through opposite column.
#7 Will it clear? Yes, 1/4 inch clearance on the ceiling! #8 placed in stand below. #9 water and decorate!
From the basement, it filled the staircase...and fit perfectly!

Uh! Oh! afterthought...what decorations will we put on a 19 foot tree?  Not enough kids ornaments to reach all the way to the top, so we strung cranberries and popcorn!  The girls lasted a bit longer with the tolerance that it took to string enough cranberries to fill the tree, but only 4 or 5 needle pokes later and we were set to decorate!

It's fun to have the girls to decorate. We set out all the traditions
and had a great time reliving past Christmas'!
I love the magic and spirit of Christmas!
